The sun made an appearance at Fair Mile Cholsey to welcome Mary Berry when she visited on Saturday 25 January to officially open the new Great Hall. 350 residents from the development and Cholsey village turned out to support the opening of this community project.

After the hall had been derelict for approximately ten years, Thomas Homes who are behind the Fair Mile development, have painstakingly renovated the building to provide a multifunctional hall for both residents and the wider Cholsey community to use. The renovation work includes an impressive entrance hall, kitchen, cloakrooms and changing rooms which are located under the stage.

Hugh Thomas of Thomas Homes opened the ceremony by welcoming everyone to the event followed by Mary Berry cutting the ribbon. Hugh says, "It was our aim to achieve a real community feel for the development and the large turnout on the day was testament to the popularity of the new Great Hall."

The day's event took the form of a tea party with children bringing their cakes along for Mary to judge. 25 children brought all manner of cakes along, from Mary's signature Victoria Sponge, to jam tarts, almond cakes, a Pavlova stack and even a cake in the shape of the Great Hall itself. Mary tasted all of the children's cakes and then decided on five winners.

Althea Hudson who was a ward sister at the hospital between 1962 and 2000 also attended the event with her family. She says, "Thomas Homes have done an amazing job with the development and it was an absolute delight to see so many happy people now using the facilities on the former historic hospital site."

Mary signed books for visitors before leaving with her family who came to support her. The development is well known to them all as Mary's daughter lives in nearby Wallingford and her son in law owns a business based in Cholsey.

Karen Mole of Savills added, "Fair Mile has been an amazing success story with many of the phases being released early to keep up with demand. Further phases are to be released on 1st February when more one, two, and three bedroom homes will be available so I'd encourage anyone that's interested to get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment."
